How to Get to Sierpe, Costa Rica: Driving, Bus & Shuttle Guide

The picturesque river town of Sierpe, located in the Osa canton, is the primary gateway for boat transfers to Drake Bay, Corcovado National Park, and Caño Island Biological Reserve. Despite being nestled in a wild natural region, the roadway leading straight to downtown Sierpe and its river dock is 100% paved and in excellent condition, ensuring a smooth ride for any compact sedan, 4x2 SUV, electric vehicle (EV), or camper.

Direct GPS Navigation to the Dock:

Upon arrival, you can park your vehicle in our 24/7 guarded private parking lot ($8 USD per night). Please note that parking is not included with boat tickets and must be reserved separately.
2. Mobile Connectivity En Route and in Drake Bay: Airalo eSIM
Staying connected with mobile cellular data is essential while driving to use GPS apps (Waze and Google Maps), access boat booking confirmations, and message your eco-lodge:
- Crucial Signal Advisory: While driving the paved highway and in Sierpe town you will enjoy strong cell signal; however, once you board the boat and cruise through the Sierpe River and open Pacific Ocean, cellular signal drops completely or is very weak. Reception returns once you disembark in Drake Bay.
- How to Get Reliable Data Without Swapping Physical SIMs: We strongly recommend installing a prepaid Airalo Costa Rica eSIM on your phone before departing. It installs 100% digitally, providing cheap local data so you stay connected on the road and immediately upon reaching Drake Bay.
3. By Public Bus: Tracopa & Local Sierpe Connection
The national bus company Tracopa connects San José with Costa Rica's South Pacific on a reliable daily schedule:
- Tracopa Terminal in San José: Google Maps | Waze | Tracopa Routes & Schedules
- Direct Buses San José ➔ Sierpe: Tracopa currently runs two direct daily departures from their main San José terminal to the Tracopa Bus Stop in Sierpe:
- Morning Departure (08:30 AM): Travels throughout the day, arriving in Sierpe late afternoon. (Please note: Due to the 5.5 to 6-hour transit time, this bus usually arrives after the final 04:00 PM public boat has departed. You will need a pre-arranged private water taxi or stay the night in Sierpe to take the morning boat).
- Afternoon Departure (15:00 / 03:00 PM): Arrives in Sierpe at night; ideal for enjoying dinner and a restful night in town before catching the 11:30 AM morning boat next day.
- Alternative Route via Palmar Norte: If traveling outside these hours, take any Tracopa bus that stops at the Tracopa Terminal in Palmar Norte. The major advantage is that the local public bus stop to Sierpe is located just a few meters' walk from where Tracopa drops you off:
- Exact GPS location: Local Bus Stop in Palmar Norte (short walk from Tracopa).
- Palmar Norte to Sierpe Bus Schedules (Sierpe to Palmar Norte Bus Schedules).
- Arrival point in Sierpe: Sierpe (located within easy walking distance of the La Perla del Sur dock).
4. Tourist Shuttles, Taxis & Important Note on Uber
- Shared Tourist Minivans (Shuttles): Offer convenient morning pickups from hotels in Manuel Antonio, Quepos, Dominical, and Uvita (07:30 AM - 08:30 AM), arriving in Sierpe before 11:00 AM.

- Crucial Warning Regarding Uber: Please be aware that in Uvita, Quepos, Dominical, and Manuel Antonio, Uber coverage is virtually non-existent or unreliable. Never rely on hailing an Uber last-minute to get to Sierpe; book an official taxi or shuttle in advance.
5. Essential En Route Services: Payments, ATMs, Gas & EV Charging
